Your Body Is One System: Why a Systems Biology Approach Is the Only Way to Truly Heal
You cut out gluten and dairy. You took the probiotic, the prebiotic, the L-glutamine, the herbal antimicrobials. You did the elimination diet, then the reintroduction, then the elimination again when the bloating came back.

Here is what happens on a blood sugar rollercoaster. You eat a breakfast that is mostly carbohydrate, say a bagel or a smoothie with no protein, fat, or fiber in it.
Glucose spikes. Insulin surges to clear it. The overcorrection drops you into a low, and your body responds the way it responds to any perceived emergency: it releases cortisol and adrenaline to pull glucose back up. That reactive drop feels almost identical to anxiety, which is why so many people describe their 11am shakiness or 3pm crash as a mood problem rather than a metabolic one.
Now follow the ripple, because that cortisol release is not a local event.
- Cortisol suppresses thyroid conversion, meaning less active T3 even when your TSH sits comfortably inside the reference range.
- It increases intestinal permeability, which matters enormously if you are trying to heal a leaky gut.

- Carbohydrates are not the enemy. Naked carbohydrates are. A sweet potato eaten after protein and vegetables, finished with olive oil, behaves like a completely different food than the same sweet potato eaten alone.
- Meal sequencing and spacing. Eat your vegetables and protein before your carbohydrate within a meal. Space meals three to four hours apart rather than grazing, which gives your digestive system a rest and lets the migrating motor complex do its job of sweeping the small intestine clean.
That is what a plate built on physiology looks like. It is not restrictive. It is complete.

2. The Liver: Your Body's Processing Plant
The liver performs over 500 functions, and it is not simply a detox organ. It regulates blood sugar by storing and releasing glycogen. It produces bile, which you need to digest fat and absorb fat-soluble vitamins. It converts inactive thyroid hormone T4 into active T3, with roughly 60 percent of that conversion happening in the liver. It clears used hormones, including estrogen, out of circulation, which makes it central to hormone balance.
And it processes everything you encounter.
I want to be precise here, because the wellness world has turned "detox" into a word that means juice cleanses and vague promises. Real detoxification is a biochemical process with three phases.
- Phase I uses cytochrome P450 enzymes to make compounds more water-soluble, which temporarily creates intermediates that are often more reactive than the original compound.
- Phase II conjugates those intermediates with molecules like glutathione, sulfate, glycine, and glucuronic acid to neutralize them.
- Phase III eliminates them through bile and stool, and through the kidneys and urine. The three P's: peeing, pooping, and perspiring.
Every phase requires nutrients. B vitamins, magnesium, selenium, zinc, sulfur-containing amino acids, antioxidants. If Phase I is running fast because of high exposure while Phase II is under-resourced because of poor nutrient status, you accumulate reactive intermediates. That is often what people are describing when they say a cleanse made them feel worse. It is also why I take a nourish-first approach rather than an aggressive one.
What you can control, and what you can let go of
The goal is to put your energy into what you actually influence and stop losing sleep over the rest. Your body is resilient. It was built for this.
Worth changing: the fragrance in your laundry detergent and candles, the plastic containers you microwave, alcohol intake, the endocrine-disrupting parabens and phthalates in personal care products, nonstick cookware.
Not worth your stress: the air in a dense city, the water infrastructure, the chemical residues present in the food supply, the traffic outside your window, occupational exposures. These exist. Worrying about them adds a stress load without changing the exposure.
Because you cannot control the input entirely, the leverage sits in supporting the machinery. That means cruciferous vegetables for sulforaphane, alliums for sulfur, adequate protein for the amino acids Phase II depends on, bitter foods and bile support for flow, plenty of fiber to bind conjugated compounds so they leave the body rather than getting reabsorbed, hydration for kidney clearance, and sweating.
Notice that last piece. If elimination is sluggish or bile flow is poor, Phase III fails, and conjugated estrogens and toxins get deconjugated by gut bacteria and recirculated. Your liver's success depends on your gut's function. These are not two separate projects. They are one.
3. The Gut: The Interface Between You and the World
The gut is roughly 70 to 80 percent of your immune system, the site of most serotonin production, the manufacturer of certain B vitamins and vitamin K2, and there is only a single-cell-thick barrier standing between your bloodstream and everything you swallow.
When that barrier becomes permeable, partially digested proteins and bacterial endotoxins cross into circulation. The immune system reacts. That reaction is systemic, not local, which is why gut dysfunction shows up as joint pain, skin conditions, brain fog, thyroid antibodies, and fatigue far more often than it shows up as a stomachache.
But here is the part that gets missed in most gut healing protocols: the gut is downstream of nearly everything else.

- Insufficient bile from a burdened liver means fats are poorly emulsified and the antimicrobial effect of bile is lost.

Your body runs on its own internal clock, and nearly every cell contains a molecular version of it. Your central clock in the hypothalamus is set primarily by light, and it coordinates peripheral clocks in the liver, gut, pancreas, and immune tissue. This is why light exposure is the single most effective lever for circadian regulation, ahead of any supplement.
The practical implication is that the same meal is metabolized differently at 8am and 10pm. A few things worth knowing:
- Insulin sensitivity is highest earlier in the day and declines in the evening.
- Your gut microbiome has a diurnal rhythm, with populations shifting across a 24-hour cycle.
- Cortisol should peak roughly 30 to 45 minutes after waking and fall to its lowest point at night.
- Melatonin, which is not only a sleep hormone but a potent antioxidant produced in significant quantities in the gut, rises in darkness.

She is skipping breakfast and drinking coffee until 1pm, so she is running the entire morning on cortisol. Test rather than guess, and test broadly.
