Functional Nutrition for Hashimoto’s & Autoimmune Disease

Finally Understand Why You Still Don’t Feel Like Yourself

"Dr. Sarah Khan, functional nutritionist, consulting with a patient on autoimmune disease management through personalized nutrition in New York"

You’re eating well.
You’re trying to manage stress.
Your labs may even come back “normal.”

Yet you still feel exhausted, inflamed, bloated, anxious, foggy, or disconnected from your body.

Many individuals living with Hashimoto’s or autoimmune symptoms are told their only option is to “monitor it,” reduce stress, or simply accept feeling unwell as their new normal. But autoimmune conditions rarely develop in isolation. They are often influenced by a combination of inflammation, blood sugar dysregulation, gut health imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, chronic stress, nervous system overload, and environmental factors.

My approach to functional nutrition focuses on understanding the deeper patterns contributing to symptoms so we can create a sustainable, personalized plan that supports long-term healing and resilience.

What Is Hashimoto’s?

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland. Over time, this can affect thyroid hormone production and contribute to symptoms impacting energy, digestion, metabolism, mood, hormones, and cognitive function.

While thyroid medication can be incredibly important and necessary for many individuals, it often does not address the underlying factors contributing to inflammation, immune dysregulation, or persistent symptoms.

Functional nutrition looks at the body as an interconnected system rather than isolating symptoms individually.

Common Symptoms of Hashimoto’s & Autoimmune Imbalances

You may be experiencing:

  • Fatigue, even after a full night of sleep
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Bloating or digestive discomfort
  • Constipation
  • Hair thinning or hair loss
  • Anxiety or feeling “wired but tired”
  • Weight resistance or unexplained weight changes
  • Feeling cold easily
  • Joint pain or body aches
  • Blood sugar crashes or intense cravings
  • Skin changes or dryness
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Burnout and nervous system dysregulation
  • Feeling dismissed despite ongoing symptoms

Many people are told these symptoms are simply stress, aging, or “normal,” when in reality they may reflect deeper physiological imbalances worth exploring.

Root Causes I Commonly Investigate

Autoimmune conditions are complex and multifactorial. My work focuses on identifying and supporting the systems that influence inflammation, immune resilience, and overall health.

Areas we often explore include:

Blood Sugar Dysregulation

Frequent blood sugar spikes and crashes can contribute to inflammation, hormone disruption, fatigue, and nervous system stress. Stabilizing blood sugar is often one of the foundational pieces of supporting autoimmune healing.

Gut Health & Microbiome Function

The gut plays a critical role in immune function, nutrient absorption, inflammation regulation, and neurotransmitter production. Symptoms like bloating, constipation, food sensitivities, reflux, or irregular digestion may indicate deeper gut imbalances contributing to systemic inflammation.

Nervous System & Stress Physiology

Chronic stress impacts digestion, blood sugar regulation, sleep quality, inflammation, hormone signaling, and immune resilience. Many individuals with autoimmune conditions spend years functioning in survival mode without realizing how deeply nervous system dysregulation can affect physical health.

Nutrient Deficiencies

Low levels of nutrients such as iron, vitamin D, magnesium, selenium, zinc, B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids can impact thyroid function, immune regulation, energy production, and recovery.

Inflammation & Lifestyle Factors

Sleep, movement, stress load, environmental exposures, eating patterns, and chronic inflammation all influence how the body functions on a day-to-day basis.

My Functional Nutrition Approach

My work combines functional nutrition, systems biology, sustainable habit formation, and nervous system support to help individuals better understand and support their health.

Rather than relying on fear-based wellness advice or restrictive protocols, my approach focuses on building resilience through realistic and personalized strategies.

Together, we focus on:

  • Supporting blood sugar regulation
  • Improving digestion and gut health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Supporting thyroid and immune function
  • Optimizing energy and recovery
  • Creating sustainable nutrition and lifestyle habits
  • Nervous system regulation and stress resilience
  • Rebuilding trust with food and the body
  • Helping you feel empowered rather than overwhelmed

I also believe deeply in education. My goal is not only to help you feel better, but to help you understand why your symptoms may be happening so you can make informed decisions about your health long term.

A More Sustainable Approach to Healing

You do not need to fear every ingredient.
You do not need to eliminate every food forever.
You do not need to become consumed by wellness culture to support your health.

Healing often happens through consistency, nourishment, regulation, and understanding your body more deeply — not through perfection.

My goal is to help you create a way of eating and living that supports both your physiology and your life.
